Rent A Car Koh Lanta Insurance & Deposit Policy
Rent A Car Koh Lanta Insurance & Deposit Policy — Koh Lanta, Thailand
Effective Date: [09/08/2025] Applies To: Car and Scooter/Motorbike Rentals on Koh Lanta
1. No Full Insurance Coverage
Rent A Car Koh Lanta does not provide full (comprehensive) insurance coverage on rented vehicles. By renting from us, the Customer acknowledges and agrees that:
- The rental fee does not include comprehensive insurance (CDW/full-cover)
- Any damage, loss, theft, or third-party liability arising during the rental period is the Customer’s responsibility, up to the terms outlined below.
- Basic compulsory third-party liability (Thai “por ror bor” / CTPL) coverage may apply as required by Thai law, but this covers third-party injury/damage only — not damage to the rented vehicle itself.
- Customers are strongly encouraged to check whether their travel insurance, credit card, or home motor insurance covers rental vehicles in Thailand before relying on it.
- Optional damage-waiver or limited-protection add-ons may be offered at an additional daily rate — these reduce, but do not eliminate, the Customer’s liability, and do not constitute full insurance.
- The Customer must hold a valid driving license (international driving permit or Thai-recognized license) appropriate to the vehicle class rented. Riding/driving without a valid license voids all damage protection and deposit refund eligibility.
2. Security Deposit Requirement
A refundable security deposit (cash or credit card hold) is required before the vehicle is handed over. The deposit amount depends on:
- Vehicle type (scooter vs. car vs. larger vehicle)
- Rental duration
- Vehicle value
Typical deposit ranges (adjust to your rates):
| Vehicle Type | Typical Deposit |
|---|---|
| Scooter/Motorbike | ฿2,000–5,000 or passport hold* |
| Economy Car | ฿5,000–10,000 |
| SUV/Larger Vehicle | ฿10,000–20,000 |
*If holding a passport as deposit, note that Thai regulations restrict this practice for foreign tourists in some cases — a cash or card deposit is recommended instead of passport retention.
The deposit is held as security against damage, loss, theft, excessive wear, traffic fines, late returns, or violation of rental terms (e.g., off-road use, racing, transporting the vehicle by ferry/boat without permission).
3. How the Deposit Is Handled
Deposit resolution is assessed case-by-case based on the condition of the returned vehicle:
| Situation | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Returned in original condition, on time, full tank as agreed | Full deposit refunded |
| Minor scratches/wear consistent with normal use | Full deposit refunded, no deduction |
| Cosmetic damage (scratches, dents, broken mirror, flat tire from road hazard) | Partial deduction based on repair cost |
| Major damage (accident damage, engine/mechanical damage from misuse) | Deduction up to full deposit; Customer covers repair costs exceeding the deposit |
| Total loss or theft | Full deposit forfeited; Customer liable for remaining vehicle value unless a protection add-on was purchased |
| Late return | Deduction of late fee (per hour/day, per rental agreement) |
| Traffic fines incurred during rental | Deducted from deposit or invoiced separately if fine arrives after settlement |
| Rule violation (e.g., off-roading, island-hopping by ferry without permission, unlicensed driver) | Deposit forfeited in full; damage protection voided |
We reserve the right to assess damage ourselves or via a trusted local mechanic/garage. Customers will be shown photos/videos (taken at pickup and return) and, where relevant, a repair quote before any deduction is finalized.
4. Refund Timeline
Deposits are refunded immediately after the vehicle is inspected upon return. The vehicle is checked on the spot for damage, fuel level, and condition; if no issues are found, the full deposit (cash or card hold release) is returned to the Customer right away, on-site. If damage or other issues are identified during this inspection, any applicable deduction is explained to the Customer before the remaining deposit is released.
5. Customer Responsibilities
By renting from Rent A Car Koh Lanta, the Customer agrees to:
- Inspect the vehicle at pickup and confirm existing damage is documented (photos/video) before driving off.
- Return the vehicle in the condition received, normal wear excepted, with the agreed fuel level.
- Report any accident, breakdown, or theft immediately to Rent A Car Koh Lanta and, where required, to local police.
- Cover repair or replacement costs exceeding the deposit amount within [X days] of notification.
- Provide accurate contact details, local accommodation info, and a valid ID/license for deposit processing and any follow-up charges (e.g., fines that arrive after return).
- Not use the vehicle for illegal activity, racing, off-road terrain (unless renting an off-road-rated vehicle), or transport it off Koh Lanta by boat/ferry without prior written permission.
6. Limitation of Liability
Rent A Car Koh Lanta is not liable for:
- Indirect, incidental, or consequential losses arising from use of the rented vehicle (e.g., missed ferries, tours, or flights due to breakdown).
- Injury or loss caused by road conditions, weather, or circumstances outside our reasonable control.
- Personal belongings left in or lost from the vehicle.
7. Acknowledgment
By completing a booking or signing a rental agreement with Rent A Car Koh Lanta, the Customer confirms they have read, understood, and agreed to this Insurance & Deposit Policy, and that they hold a valid license to operate the rented vehicle in Thailand.
